Evesham triumph over Bredon in icy blast
By Andrew Flaxman
Closer than we thought, but a win's a win
The wind was gusting like an Eskimo let loose in a baked bean factory, but there was an excellent turnout from Evesham's Under-13s on Sunday as the lads braved the bitter conditions in force, including a welcome return to action by Tom.
The word on the street was that this might be a routine victory, but Bredon were clearly pumped up for this one with the chance of getting one over on their schoolmates spurring them on. And that energy and aggression came so close to securing them a victory as they played with real purpose and skill throughout this match.
With an Arctic wind lashing hailstones across the pitch, it wasn't pleasant viewing for the Evesham parents and that was made worse as the fired-up visitors raced into an early 2-0 lead. Evesham simply weren't at the races in the first period, running in ones and twos with their usual crisp passing game abandoned, whilst Bredon were winning the battle at the breakdown and looking to move the ball whenever they could.
Evesham did, however, have their opportunities with both Oli A and Owen almost making it to the whitewash in the corner before being put into touch.
The coaches' words of wisdom at the interval hit home and Evesham came out with a renewed sense of purpose and much better attacking shape. Josh N soon scored the first of his two tries, the prop going over after a classic pick and go.
With the deficit narrowed, the boys rediscovered their passing game and this time it was Bredon who were pinned in their own half for long periods. Excellent passing from the back of a ruck saw Alex score an equalising try.
It looked as if the home side were doing their best to allow Bredon back into it with a series of penalties, but it was a Bredon infringement that led to the home side taking the lead as quick thinking saw Josh drive over from an Evesham penalty to score his second of the match.
It looked as if teh alds had wrapped it up when a long break from Oli P saw him add another try to continue his rich vein of scoring form in recent weeks. Yet there was still time for the visitors to score their third try before the end.
So - not their best performance, but determination and skill saw the lads through in the end. (And apologies AGAIN for the late report)
