Running in the tries in festival style

By

Under-13s dominate their festival pool with three wins out of three

Evesham's youngsters enjoyed a clean sweep of victories in today's (Sunday's) festival at Worcester Warriors, running in a total of 23 tries without conceding a single one.

The fluent running rugby was reminiscent of last week's victory over Old Pats, but in truth the opposition were never at the same level.Still it is good to see the boys knitting together a pattern of play where they defend stoutly, then break with width and pace that few other local sides can match.

First to be put to the sword were Droitwich 2nds (surely it would have been better for the organisers to pit our lads against their first teams) and the result was in no doubt from the first seconds as Theo collected the Droitwich kick-off and ran straight through to touch down. Two more tries from Harry followed in those first few minutes, first pouncing on a loose ball and then bursting through to intercept and sprint to the line.
Angelo almost made it four but was just in touch short of the line. Nice handling put Ewan in for that fourth and then Owen and Darcy also came close to going in in the corners. It was only sympathetic refereeing that was keeping Droitwich in the match, though Evesham were grateful for Darcy's demonic tackling stint, but there was still time for Josh A to drive over and touch down to make the final score 5-0.

Next up were Worcester 2nds and again the game was a mismatch. Connor almost made it to the whitewash in the corner, before a trademark Theo break saw him hurdling tackles like Colin Jackson to open the scoring. The lads were now hitting their stride with great handling, which saw first Oli P, then Theo score tries to extend the led. Then Luke D made a try for Harry W and Josh N burst over from close range to put the result beyond doubt. A typically knifing run by Feddie after good work by the forwards made it six and then the two hookers combined with Jonty putting Kal over to make it seven.

The final match against Old Halesonians began in the same vein as the first game with a try straight from the kick off - this time Luke R being the scorer. The tries came in quick succession as an excellent pressing game kept the Black Country side pinned near their own line and forced a series a of turnovers. Still some of the tries were stylish affairs. Oli P made it a hat-trick of scores for the day with a lovely jinking run before the final score ended up 11-0.

It does seem now that the boys' all-round game has improved in recent weeks. To add to the handling and pace of their back play, their tackling is strong, rucking has improved and they have the makings of a very good scrum, able to win its own ball and take a few against the head. Well done boys and keep it up.
